U.S. Copyright Definition:

A “short online literary work” contains at least 50 words and no more than 17,500 words and is first published as part of a website or online platform, including online newspapers, social media websites, and social networking platforms.

Examples of works that may be registered with this application include poems, short stories, articles, essays, columns, blog entries, and social media posts.

  • You must be the author and copyright owner of all the articles, and only the TEXT may be registered.
  • The articles may not be works made for hire.
  • Minimum 2 articles, maximum 50 (24 on this form).
  • All titles in the group must have been published in the same 3-calendar-month period in a calendar year.
  • You must provide an electronic copy of each article (PDF or Word doc) The filename must match the title (e.g., “The Big Day.pdf”).
  • You must provide the publication date for each article.
  • You must provide the word count for each article.
  • You must provide a title for each article in the form below.

You may either register works under pseudonyms or register works under given names and simply notify the Office that a pseudonym appears on the work. Pseudonymous works are protected for a term of 95 years from date of first publication or 120 years from date of creation, whichever is the shorter. Works registered under given names are protected for the life of the author(s) plus 70 years. 

This author’s name will NOT appear in the Copyright Office records. Anonymous copyright rights last for a term of 95 years from date of first publication or 120 years from date of creation, whichever is the shorter.

The Copyright Office permits you to add a note to the examiner if you wish. We recommend utilizing this only to clarify a necessary point (e.g., “the author’s pseudonym appears on the work”). Extraneous information can only serve to complicate successful registration of your work(s).

Confirmation per Copyright Office:

17 USC 506(e): Any person who knowingly makes a false representation of a material fact in the application for copyright registration provided by section 409, or in any written statement filed with the application, shall be fined not more than $2500.
